About the lawyers:
John D. Hope
John is a native son of the North Peace having moved, as a child, to Fort St. John in 1957. John left the Peace Country to obtain a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Alberta and a Law Degree from the University of British Columbia. Although he initially practiced in Fort St. John as a junior litigator, John moved to Vancouver Island as a commercial solicitor, acting for both banks and their commercial customers, from 1981 to 1997. However, the lure of the Peace Country was strong and John returned in 1997 to establish a law practice with his wife, Ann M. Lord. For the last 15 years, John has practiced in Fort St. John in the areas of civil and criminal litigation. John brings to the practice thirty years of experience both in the courtroom and as a commercial solicitor. John is a long-standing member of the North Peace Rod and Gun Club and a member of the B.C. Wildlife Federation and he is well known for willingly sharing his years of legal expertise and knowledge to support junior counsel and to assist his community with pro bono work.
Ann M. Lord
Unlike her husband and law partner, Ann is still working on her status as a “peace country sourdough”, having moved to Fort St. John and having established a law practice with her husband, John D. Hope, in 1997. Originally a native of the south coast, Ann obtained her law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1991. She distinguished her academic years at UBC by ranking in the top 3 students in both her second and third years in law school. Notwithstanding offers from the University for advanced education in law and from the judiciary for a clerking position, Ann established herself immediately as a commercial solicitor and has continued that work for most of her legal career. In addition, Ann’s ability to research and untangle arcane areas of the law has proven most useful in both her own practice and that of her husband. John, whilst a brilliant and, in the words of the judiciary, a “surgical” counsel in the courtroom, has at times required “backup” in terms of paperwork and research. Since 2002, Ann has filled that gap with excellent results.
