How To Avoid Emergency Rooms This Holiday Season

In order to avoid emergency room visits this holiday season a little bit of planning ahead can go a long way.

Keep in mind that during the holiday season there is often a decrease in hours of operation associated with pharmacists and doctors. Just like the rest of us they need a little time off as well to spend time with their family and friends.

In order to limit visits to the emergency room only go if you require important immediate care such as:

  • Internal Bleeding
  • Fainting
  • Broken Bones
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest Pain
    • Tightness or discomfort

In most cases if you need medical attention you should go to your family doctor. However this can sometimes be easier said than done for Fort St. John residents without a family doctor. There are however other alternatives before considering going to the hospital.

One option is unattached patient clinics. Before you go though it is advised that you call ahead at 250-262-5210.

If you or your loved one needs a prescription filled try and get it filled before the holidays as your local pharmacy and drug stores may also have shortened hours during the holidays.

Also if you need confidential and non-emergency health information you can call HealthLink B.C. at 811. This service is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

As a final reminder though to make sure that anyone who requires urgent medical attention should still call 911 immediately.
